November 2006 |
between Kirkbeck and Birkwith Lane/Low Bottom. |
Completely broken, single step timber stile that could not be
used was replaced by a two step timber stile with hand post. |
| |
between Fourlands and Raygill, on the Ingleton/ Bentham parish
boundary |
An awkward to use, timber railed construction (a sort of stile)
which obstructed the use of the existing stone step stile was
replaced by a new four post arrangement with cross rails
on the top of the wall (lamb proof!) A new stone step was also
put in, on the Bentham side, to make the first step-up a little
easier. |
| December 2006 |
between Lund Farm and Country
Harvest |
The old concrete beam ‘footbridge’ had fallen
into the beck many years ago. It was ok to cross the beck in
dryish weather, but very difficult and very wet at times of
heavy rainfall. This was replaced by a new timber footbridge
and handrail - extremely handy for the local sheep!! |
| |
Bridleway between Enter Farm and
Nutstile near the ‘pond’ |
An old timber gate that was
difficult to use, especially for horse riders, was replaced by
a new timber gate/ clashing post/ rider friendly opening device
with rails to close the gap to the side. The existing concrete
hanging post was used. Difficult working conditions with
horrible, soft, squelchy digging |
| January 2007 |
Behind Fowgill, on path between
Summerfield Farm and Batty Farm |
An old single step timber
stile with very short tread on one side was replaced by a new
two step timber stile with hand post. Also the approach through
stones/ boulders was made easier and safer to use. The very
windy day and hard digging made it interesting for everyone!! |
| February 2007 |
Between Oldfield and Flannagill on
moor edge, on path from Slaidburn Road (above Battersby’s)
to Flannagill |
A timber railed stile with breeze blocks as
first steps that was difficult to use because the approach from
the moor was up a stone built retaining wall that was tricky to
climb was replaced by a new two step timber stile with hand
post. Two rails were fixed to enclose the straining wire on the
fence. Some of the stones on the wall were re-arranged to make
it easier to negotiate, especially for walkers with a smallish
inside leg measurements! A bit nippy; the snow late in
the day sent us packing. |
| March 2007 |
On the path south from the road at
Willow Tree towards Oakhead, a few yards away from the
Yorkshire/ Lancashire county boundary, but still in Yorkshire |
A timber pallet in fence, acting
as a gate into the field was replaced by a new timber hand or
pedestrian gate with new hanging post/ clashing post/ fence
posts/ rails. The original netting was replaced to make secure.
Also a new signpost on road at Willow Tree was erected pointing
north towards Bentham. |
| April 2007 |
Down the fields from Willow Tree
on path north to Mill Lane. |
A high single step stile with a rocky approach
from both sides and difficult to use was replaced, a few yards
to the east, by a new two step timber stile with hand post.
|
| |
South east of Ridding Lane on the
Heritage Trail. |
A squeeze stile covered with netting was
replaced by a new lamb gate and hanging post. Some breeze
blocks on the low side were replaced by a small timber step. |
| May 2007 |
Bridleway near High Bottom Farm. |
An old metal gate was replaced by a new metal
gate with rider friendly opening device. Very, very wet.
Almost the wettest yet!! Horrible! |
| July 2007 |
On Heritage Trail. The last stile before
emerging onto the road at Greystonegill Bridge. |
A ‘tired’ lamb gate covering a
stone step stile was replaced by a new lamb gate and hanging
post. |
| |
On Heritage Trail below Linghaw
Farm near the old quarry |
A loose hanging post holding a lamb gate that
covered a stone squeeze stile was replaced by a new hanging
post and spring. The existing gate was re-used. The vegetation
encroaching on the squeeze stile was cut back. |
| September and October 2007 |
Bridleway from Robin Lane towards
Tatterthorn |
Much encroaching and overhanging vegetation was
cleared from the bridleway making it far easier for horse
riders to use. A bridleway marker post at the end of hard
surface section of the bridleway was also fixed. |
| Self imposed Foot and Mouth
restrictions by NYCC. Ranger and volunteers stayed off farmland
during September and October 2007. |
